California Poppy
California Poppy is in the same family as opium & heroin (but non-addictive!) and is often used as a sedative and to alleviate pain. All aerial (above-ground) plant parts are useful- the fresh or dried herb works as a tea or sprinkle the petals on salad; I imagine a Cali-Poppy herbal candy with honey, but that’s just my sweet tooth talking!
Sleep medicine - I use a spoonful or two of the alcohol extract in water if I'm having a hard time going to bed. California Poppy is safe for small children, especially if hyperactive. Native Americans used California Poppy as a sedative for their babies, especially when teething. Just a few drops would probably do!
This herb is calming to help alleviate the effects of stress & anxiety. It works on serotonin and GABA inceptors in the brain. Don’t use it with benzo's, ssri's, or opiates.
I look forward to the California Poppy blooms and really enjoy just sitting in the garden with it. It’s a peculiar and potent medicine that’s worth getting to know. Thanks for reading!
